Jim, I agree, this discovery has energized me more than before, have realized that we are not just creatures to be acted upon, but within us we have power, or energy or call it whatever that can drive us to where we want with our full knowledge and control.

Good to know that,

I'm now beginning to work on setting the date with alums who want to return, and those they want to accompany them -- or want to recommend.

I'll write you via email -- so we can see what can be worked out. I'm making some space available for new folks.

This year, I too, will be celebrating American thanksgiving (the second time for me this year as we Canadians delighted in pumpkin pies and turkeys just over a month ago). I will be celebrating with the Americans, Canadians, South Africans, Nigerians, Brazilians, Koreans and many other nationalities of this international program. As we were excitedly ordering ingredients for the festivities online (apparently some of the thanksgiving essentials aren't available in the UK) we began to reminiscing about thanksgivings past and each family's unique traditions. It was amazing to hear the diverse recollections of thanksgivings and special occasions from, quite literally, all over the world. I realized in that moment that I am thankful for opportunity. For the ability to meet and connect with those around me and for both the ups and downs of life. I have been on an incredible journey to discover life and discover myself. I am thankful for it all.

Jim, when you first invited me for a workshop, I thought that I will be overwhelmed by it and be exhausted by end o it. When I attended the first one in 2008, I came out of it so relaxed and energized. I always miss your workshops and look forward to it, I appreciate the approach of valuing the contribution of each member and allowing people to digest themselves, this is a very powerful self discovery process. More interesting is the opportunity to get long term friends with similar aspiration, some of my closest friends have found them through your workshop.

In Swahili we say, asante sana (thank you) and keep up with this spirit.

What an incredibly inspiring story from Marcela. She mentions in her interview that she's a doer - I want in my life to have more of that spirit (or ability). She saw her vision and went for it, almost naturally knowing the steps that needed to be taken to achieve her success. I admire her strength and perseverance. Studying abroad this year has opened my eyes to more of this possibility - I can't wait to bring back to Canada the things I have learned. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks for your nice response, Jim.
That is indeed special, that they managed to raise such an amount of money locally. Am glad that I can be of service to the street children and other children in difficult circumstances in Tanzania again.

Thanks for the nice site. I also had a look at the Manifesto. Great!

Dear Meindert,

Glad to hear from you.

Yes, they raised the money within Tanzania, as much to prove that there are resources and that the people can be self-reliant as for what the money can do. (The money was for various purposes, among them the street children.)

In a way, the self-reliance of the street children inspired people to believe they could raise this money in-country, rather than relying on others. A real frame-breaker.

I'm glad to learn *why* you're asking -- the leadership you will be expressing. Thank you for what you'll be doing on behalf of all of us.

You can learn more about this mindset in the manifesto, a free download that is on this page, which then can lead you to the book -- "What Kind of World Do You Want?" We want to give you ... and your friends here on this site ... as much wind at your back as we can.

Best wishes,
Jim

Dear Jim,

Just ran accross your post on street children. Was intrigued by the following part in your post, but could not really follow what you meant here:

"By the way, relative to philanthropy: One of the countries, Tanzania, went on to raise $1.5 million US during their annual campaign — within the country, an unprecedented accomplishment. Perhaps this had less to do with philanthropy … and was merely a different expression in themselves of the self-reliance they saw in the children of the street"

Did Tanzania raise $1.5 million US WITHIN the country (and if so, from whom) for the cause of street children?... Would love to hear more, esp. as I will be joining the Amani Centre for Street Children (http://www.amanikids.org ) as their new executive director soon...

Thanks!

Meindert Schaap,

Jim,

You comments this morning really hit home. It has been a week filled with families in crisis both financially and emotionally... it's hard to find the blance between compassion and being sucked into the chaos.....

It has also been a week of amazing opportunities to build a bright future for myself and the families we serve...guess I will focus on those and make the choice to follow the path to positive outcomes available to us all.

Keep up the good work!
